Blink and you’ll miss it: the eye-tracking tech improving how we work for customers
The future of energy isn’t just about wind farms, smart grids or the tech we build, it’s also about the people powering it. And now, thanks to some AI-powered eye-tracking, we’re helping those people to work smarter, faster and with just a glance – so they can focus more on delivering for customers.
Forget clicking and dragging – what if all you needed to control your computer was… a look?
We’re exploring how eye-tracking and artificial intelligence can fundamentally change the way we work – making tasks simpler and ultimately giving our people more time and headspace to solve problems, make decisions and, most importantly, to support our customers.
Developed by Munich-based startup 4tiitoo, the tool – called NUIA – lets you steer your screen with your eyes. Reading, scrolling, clicking, typing: your gaze does most of the work.
The idea is simple. You look, it moves. You read, it scrolls. You want to place your cursor between two letters? The technology gets it there without you batting an eyelid. (Well, technically you do – but you get the point.) And when our teams are working more efficiently and with less friction, customers feel the benefit – through sharper focus on their needs.
The software is trained with AI and machine learning, meaning it doesn’t just track where you're looking – it starts to anticipate what you want to do next.
When AI meets eyesight
Every day, the average office worker makes up to 5,000 mouse clicks – a silent productivity killer and which can be a burden on the body in the long term. This tech flips that. Using AI-powered ‘gaze prediction’, the software tracks eye movements to control the screen.
It may sound like a miniscule change, but the results speak for themselves. Trials across several of our departments in Europe, from the Nordics to the Balkans, have shown a 5-10% uplift in productivity, while easing the physical strain of computer-based work. It’s fast, intuitive and designed to integrate seamlessly into daily tasks.
We first spotted this innovation through E.ON Group Innovation’s Grid Startup Challenge, an initiative designed to scout out high-impact tech, where 4tiitoo’s idea stood out for its ability to solve a universal challenge: how to make digital work more human – and more customer-focused.
Because while we love smart grids and smarter homes, the future of energy also relies on the people behind the scenes – analysts, engineers, operators – who spend hours a day at screens. Over the last two years more than 200 E.ON colleagues have tested the system and the feedback is compelling: better focus, a reduced risk of repetitive strain issues, and smoother workflows. For those with mobility or accessibility challenges, it also opens doors to a more inclusive workplace.
Looking ahead (quite literally)…
This is what innovation looks like: smart, AI-driven tools that quietly transform the everyday. While the world often sees the energy transition as wind turbines and grid tech, the digital experience of our people is just as critical to driving change.
