Sun, sea and solar power
While you’ve been topping up your tan or enjoying sundowners by the Adriatic, there’s been another kind of sun-powered magic happening behind the scenes. Across Croatia, we’re helping hotels quietly tap into solar energy – making summer getaways cleaner, greener and powered by pure sunshine.
Croatia’s crystal-clear coastline, historic towns and sun-drenched beaches have long been a summer favourite. But while you’ve been sipping cocktails by the sea or gazing out from your hotel rooftop, something else has been soaking up the sun… and it’s not just your tan.
From rooftop panels to tucked-away installations, growing amounts of solar power is helping Croatia’s top hotels to harness the sunshine that powers your stay sustainably.
Hidden in plain sight: the solar systems behind your stay
From Istria’s luxury resorts to family-run gems in Slavonia, we’ve been busy helping hotels go solar in style. In fact, we’re now Croatia’s market leader in photovoltaic ( PV) solutions – having designed, built and managed more than 230 solar power plants. That’s more than 90 megawatts of clean energy keeping lights on, fridges humming and your air conditioning perfectly chilled – all without interrupting the view.
Take Hotel Amarin in the coastal town of Rovinj – a sleek, four-star getaway perched by the sea. During its brief off-season window, we had just over three weeks to deliver a full installation. Challenge accepted. We designed and installed a 200 kW PV system that now generates nearly 250,000 kWh a year. That’s enough energy to power more than 70 average UK homes – or keep every cocktail perfectly cold, all summer long.
Blending seamlessly into the hotel’s architecture, the solar panels work in the background with no noise, no disruption, and no impact on the ocean views.
The sunshine effect: less carbon, more care
This is about more than just energy efficiency, it’s about cutting carbon while keeping comfort high. Our other PV installations at Hotel Amarin and Hotel Materra across the country are together saving more than 330 tonnes of CO₂ each year. That’s the equivalent of taking over 70 cars off the road, or powering more than 200 homes sustainably.
Meanwhile, 15 Valamar resorts across Croatia are already up and running with solar, and 17 new projects are in the pipeline. So whether you’re lounging by the pool, charging your phone in your room, or enjoying a candlelit dinner, chances are you’re experiencing solar energy in action – even if you never see it.
And thanks to invisible innovation and partnerships with forward-thinking hotel groups, we’re quietly powering a more sustainable summer… one rooftop at a time.
