Illustrating Coventry’s greener outlook with ‘Our Imagined Future’
Ever wondered what the future could look like through a child’s eyes? We’ve unveiled a 32ft mural in heart of Coventry to showcase just that.
Right in the heart of Coventry, we’ve unveiled a giant mural depicting what a more sustainable future could look like, as visualised by children. Our striking mural, titled ‘Our Imagined Future’, illustrates what children across the country imagine a greener city could look like.
Coventry has been our home for almost 30 years and we’re proud to be Coventry City Council’s strategic energy partner. Together, we’ll be working to build a cleaner and more sustainable city, and to celebrate this 15-year partnership, we commissioned the beautiful mural in Coventry’s FarGo Village.
The 32ft mural was designed by artists Ben Barter and muralist Katie O’ Sullivan and was inspired by our research with 2,000 children from across the UK1. The children were asked what they’d like to see in more sustainable cities of the future and suggestions ranged from more parks and green spaces (58%) to animals living in harmony amongst us (44%) and even litter-picking robots (19%).
The mural design incorporates key findings from the new research, as well as sustainable solutions which exist today, such as heat pumps, solar panels and EV chargers as part of a new energy world.
Painting ‘Our Imagined Future’
The mural took over 40 hours to complete and was finished by pupils aged 9-12 from local schools, Earlsdon Primary and West Coventry Academy, who enjoyed bringing the mural’s litter picking robots, foxes and animated school children to life.
Can you spot a lot?
To encourage children across the UK to engage with ‘Our Imagined Future’, we’ve pulled together the below quiz of things to spot across the mural:
- How many litter-picking robots can you see?
- How many electric vehicle chargers can you see?
- Can you spot any recycling bins?
- Name all of the animals that you can see - there’s an extra point, if you can count how many animals there are in total.
- Can you see the iconic Coventry Cathedral? Once you find this, how many solar panels can you see on the building?
- How many wind turbines can you see on the wind farm?
- What types of sustainable shops can you see? Name at least two.
- Can you see any types of sustainable, public transport? Name at least one.
- How many trees can you see?
Our other work in Coventry
E.ON is in a pioneering 15-year partnership with Coventry City Council which aims to revolutionise energy use in the city to benefit residents and communities as well as the wider economy.
But our work in Coventry spreads even further. We’re playing a key part in Motofest Coventry 2024, with a stand including Scalextric, talks from E.ON Next Veloce Racing Drivers, plus Extreme E Racing simulators. And E.ON Next is the major sponsor of Coventry’s Godiva Festival 2024, a staple event in the city's cultural and events calendar.
We’ve also worked with Coventry’s Poet Laureate, John Bernard, to craft a poem based on a survey into the nation’s desire for sustainable change. John’s poem 'Spark a Light'' sounds a "siren of inspiration" for sustainable change, bringing together the hopes, dreams and wishes of people from across his city - and the UK as a whole.
If you’re interested in seeing ‘Our Imagined Future’ for yourself, you can visit the mural at FarGo Village, 105-106 Far Gosford Street, Coventry, CV1 5EA from 22nd May 2024 onwards.
